Menopause, a natural phase in a woman's life, can often bring about a lot of challenges that
impact physical, emotional, and social well-being. For one woman in Omagh, who was referred on to Omagh Healthy Living (OHL) Social Prescribing service the challenges had become overwhelming, leading to time off work and a struggle to find appropriate support. Thankfully, through the support of Omagh Healthy Living, she found the help she needed to reclaim her live. This story reflects a broader impact, as many women in the Omagh area benefitted from the support provided by this service.
Social prescribing, a holistic approach to healthcare, connects individuals with community resources to improve their overall health and well-being. Recognising the need for menopause support, OHL organized a 'Let's Talk About Menopause' Wellbeing Event at the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh.
An Evening of Insight and Empowerment
The Wellbeing Event drew 96 attendees, highlighting the demand for menopause support. Dr. Gwyneth Hinds, a retired doctor specializing in menopause, shared crucial information on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and self-care strategies. Ciara Devery, a Chartered Physiotherapist, emphasized the importance of pelvic health for overall well-being during menopause. The event was informative, uplifting, and empowering, equipping attendees with practical advice.
"Menopause: Your Time to Thrive"
Following the event's success, OHL launched a four-week Zoom programme, "Menopause: Your Time to Thrive," providing deeper insights into menopause management through medical and holistic approaches. The virtual format ensured accessibility and inclusivity.
The Impact of Social Prescribing
Social prescribing has been transformative for not only that one woman, but many women in Omagh, bridging medical care and community support. Participants gained confidence and tools to manage menopause, feeling supported and part of a community.
The OHL Social Prescribing participant commented, "The support from Omagh Healthy Living has been life changing. I felt lost and overwhelmed by menopause, but now I feel equipped to handle the challenges and thrive during this time."
A Model for Community Support
The success of the 'Let's Talk About Menopause' Wellbeing Event and the "Menopause: Your Time to Thrive" programme underscores the importance of social prescribing in addressing health and well-being. OHL's initiative serves as a model for other communities seeking to provide comprehensive support for women experiencing menopause.
By combining medical expertise, practical advice, and community engagement, social prescribing can empower women to navigate menopause with confidence.
